Uh oh! you checked the version number of your browser software and it has a “3” or even a “2” at the beginning? Here's the official position of the software company that develops and distributes our online application program (Foundant), as far as the requirements for the minimum level of browser software is concerned:

Windows

  • Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher
  • Netscape Navigator 6.2 or higher

Macintosh

  • Safari 2.1 or higher
  • Netscape Navigator 6.2 or higher

Browser minimums with the following caveats:

  • Minimum memory requirement is 64 MB
  • Minimum hard disk space is 50 MB
  • You must enable Java (Microsoft Virtual Machine or Apple MRJ)
  • If disk space drops below 10 MB, you cannot continue using our online application
  • You can use Apple's Safari browser software (2.1.0.8 or higher) however unless you are using level 3.x, you may run into some “quirks.” This is a Safari issue and Foundant is working to resolve the problem.

CAUTION: Performing any type of software installation or upgrade carries with it a certain level of risk. ALWAYS PERFORM A COMPLETE AND FULL BACKUP BEFORE INSTALLING OR UPGRADING ANY COMPUTER SOFTWARE! There's an additional caveat when installing browser software: you may loose information such as bookmarks and “favorite web site” lists. This is especially true if you move from Netscape Navigator (which will no longer be supported as of March, 2008) to, say, Internet Explorer. If you have any doubts at all about upgrading or installing browser software, please consult with a computer software specialist (again, user groups are a great place to network with these types of professionals).

Final comments: As a general rule, it's always a good idea to stay at the most current level of web browser software so that you can take advantage of new and emerging web resources. However, developers are constantly pushing the envelope when it comes to web technologies. The current crop of web browser software represents some of the most sophisticated computer programming at the level of the PC. Cutting edge web browser technology often requires a considerable amount of RAM (random access memory) space and is prone to occasional crashes because of the sophisticated requirements of present-day web browsing. If a level 6.0 browser operates effectively for the majority of the web sites that you visit, then this may be a good browser level for you. If you visit a number of web sites that employ streaming video and complex graphics, staying at the leading edge is a must. Try not to get too caught up in “upgrade fever” while at the same time maintaining a web browser level that gives you a comfortable web surfing experience.

The bad news: If your computer hardware cannot support a level 6.0 web browser, you may be faced with the prospect of having to upgrade your computer equipment. Fortunately new PC systems can be had for as little as $350.00 without the monitor (your old monitor may work just fine). If that's still a little too pricey for you, consider bringing your old system to a reputable used computer store. In all likelihood, the used PC store will give you a nominal amount for your trade-in, and a good deal on a newer used PC system.
