The Foundation's giving guidelines
General guidelines:
- The majority of our grants go to organizations within the state of
New Mexico
- Grants made to organizations outside of New Mexico are usually in
support of research projects at colleges, institutes, or universities
- The Foundation makes grants to nonprofit agencies recognized as
such at the federal level (i.e., 501 (c)(3) agencies)
- The Foundation does not make grants to individuals
- The Foundation maintains a focus on "high-engagement" philanthropy
as "the best means of achieving our social goals" (to quote Letts &
Ryan)
- The Foundation facilitates high-engagement grantmaking
relationships by using an eFoundation model, which encourages extensive use of
Internet and web-based technologies
- Grant requests, request reviews, project tracking, and project
reporting are handled primarily via the Internet and the web
- Organizations are expected to have a high degree of familiarity
with Internet and web-based technologies
- The Foundation uses the
GuideStar service as a part of its
request review process (all organizations must first register with
GuideStar before submitting a request)
- The Foundation is theory-based—we use
attachment theory as a theory of social change
- Organizations are encouraged to learn about how the Foundation
views the application of attachment theory to the world of
philanthropy by reading the practical application article by Dr.
Pistole—“Preventing Teenage Pregnancy”—along
with the Foundation's study guide to this article (see the Resources
area for information on how to request these articles)
- In fiscal year 2004-2005, the Foundation expects to make grants
totaling $110,000 (awards range from $1,000 to $20,000)

Guideline FAQs

Q - Will you consider a
request from an organization operating under an umbrella agreement with a
501 (c)(3)?
A - Only if an organization
is using an umbrella agreement as a first step toward securing its own 501
(c)(3) status. Organizations without an explicit intent to become a 501
(c)(3) will not be considered.
Q - Our organization is not
registered with GuideStar. What should we do?
A - Nonprofit agencies can
register with
GuideStar without cost.
Q - Can we just go ahead and send you a full proposal for your
consideration?
A - No, all
Full
Proposals are by invitation only. We do, however, invite brief letters
(or email messages) of inquiry. These Initial Inquiry letters should give a
brief history of the organization and outline for the proposed project (one
paragraph should do). Please also say a word or two about your level of
experience using attachment theory.
